How we see children

Our philosophy of childcare is simple: we give children here the same care and attention we give them at home. The atmosphere at New Playground is informal, warm, and caring. Some parts of the day are quiet, and some are loud. We have four locations in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, close to the subway.

Rooms here are set up so a child can walk in and know where things are. Low shelves hold toys a child can reach alone; the art table and the book corner stay in the same place each day. The day holds breakfast, lunch, and snacks prepared here the same day, and rest when a child is tired. Meals are mostly organic produce, milk, and meat.

At drop-off, a teacher kneels down to meet each child at eye level and asks how the night went. At pickup, she can tell you what your child ate, who they played with, and what made them laugh. All teachers and caregivers are CPR and First Aid certified, and all staff are background checked and fingerprinted.

What a day looks like

Mornings start slow. A child comes in with a parent, finds a toy or a book, and settles at a table. A teacher greets each family at the door and takes note of how the night went. Breakfast is served here, made the same day it is eaten.

The middle of the day moves between play and small groups. Children paint, build with blocks, and hear stories together. Lunch is cooked here the same day and mostly uses organic produce, milk, and meat. After lunch comes rest, then outdoor time when the weather allows.

By late afternoon the room quietens. Children drift toward puzzles, books, and the soft corner while teachers tidy and get bags ready. When you arrive, a teacher tells you how the day went. Pickup is a conversation, not a handoff.

How we work with families

At pickup, a teacher tells you what your child ate, who they played with, and anything worth knowing. If you have a question, you can ask it then — or call or email later. We want the link between home and here to stay open.

The first weeks are about settling. A new child may start with shorter days or come with a familiar comfort item. Teachers will tell you how drop-off went and what helped. You can ask us to adjust the pace as your child finds their footing.
